UZBEKISTAN-BELGIAN RELATIONS
Cooperation in the political sphere.
Belgium recognized the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan on December 31, 1991. Diplomatic relations between two countries were established on March 10, 1992. Since 1995 the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan operates in Brussels.
Visits at the highest and high levels.
The official visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov to Belgium took place on November 14, 1996. The official visit of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium J.-L. Dehane to Uzbekistan took place on April 17-18, 1998. The meeting of the head of Uzbekistan with the Prime Minister of Belgium I.Leterm was held in the framework of the high-level plenary meeting on the Millennium Development Goals in New York on September 21, 2010.
Meetings of Foreign Affairs Ministers of the two countries are being held regularly. In May 2015 in the framework of the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov to Brussels, a meeting was held with the Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders and Chairman of the House of Representatives of the Belgian Parliament Mr Siegfried Bracke. As well as in July 18, 2017 in Brussels during the meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Belgium, Didier Reynders the issues of further strengthening Uzbek-Belgian cooperation were discussed.
A regular dialogue has been established between the Foreign Affairs Ministries of the two countries through political consultations. So far, there have been six rounds of political consultations (December 13, 2005 in the Republic of Uzbekistan, October 27-30, 2009 in the Republic of Uzbekistan, November 25, 2010 in Belgium, September 26-27, 2012 in the Republic of Uzbekistan, May 10, 2016 in Tashkent, May 9, 2018. in Belgium).
Inter-parliamentary cooperation. Since 2006 Interparliamentary cooperation groups are functioning in the parliaments of the two countries. Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Group with the Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan in the Belgian parliament headed by Senator Alain Destexhe.
A regular exchange of visits has been established. September 12-17, 2015 The chairman of the House of Representatives of the Belgian Parliament, Siegfried Bracke paid an official visit to Uzbekistan.
Because of a new composition of the Oliy Majlis Group for cooperation with the Parliament of the Kingdom of Belgium from the number of deputies of the Legislative Chamber and members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, the Federal Parliament of Belgium, the parliaments of Wallonia and Flanders, it was proposed to intensify inter-parliamentary relations by exchanging delegations.
November 28, 2017 Oliy Majlis delegation headed with the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs Alisher Kurmanov met in Brussels the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy Issues of the House of Representatives (Lower House) of Belgium D. van der Maelen.
