Uzbekistan’s policy in ensuring women’s rights and gender equality

The Government of Uzbekistan has been consistently carrying out reforms to support women, their education, role in society and contribution to development of various spheres.

Women make up more than 77 percent of those employed in health sector, almost 74 percent in education, 49 percent in trade, 46 percent in economics, industry, and production, 45 percent in culture and sports, over 42 percent
in agriculture, more than 37 percent in finance and insurance, 35 percent
in information and communication services, 34 percent in professional, scientific and technical activities and over 27 percent in public administration and defense.

The National Contest “Woman of the Year” was established
to encourage women to actively participate in the state and society’s life
and promote their activities. Not only women engaged in their activities
in Uzbekistan for at least five years, but also ordinary housewives can participate in it. Participants must be over 35 years of age.

On December 25, the national stage of the competition took place
in Tashkent. The Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan
Tanzila Narbayeva opened the event.

“As a representative of a legislative institution, I proudly note that more than 40 adopted regulatory documents serve to create broad conditions and unlimited opportunities for women in our country”, says Mrs. Tanzila Narbayeva. Women’s voices and opinions are considered in laws adopted
for developing Uzbekistan. Women are given high confidence. For many years, women holding leadership positions was considered something exceptional. Years have passed, and rules and procedures have changed. Now, Uzbekistan does not accept a single document that contradicts the interests of women. If we are even more active and constantly work on ourselves, then in the future, there will be even more women in parliament and local councils”.

144 women took part on the national stage. The Republican Organizing Committee assessed their activities in the life of the country and the ongoing large-scale reforms, as well as their knowledge of family issues, supporting women, and strengthening the role of women in the state and society.

The winner of the Grand Prix was awarded a diploma of the highest degree, a statuette, and a gift from the President – a car. For first place, the participant was awarded a first-degree diploma and a cash prize of 50 times the basic calculated value; for second place, a second-degree diploma and a cash prize of 40 times the basic calculated value.

The award ceremony was attended by representatives of the Senate and Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the Diplomatic Corps and Foreign Organizations, heads and employees of all ministries and agencies, and women who have succeeded in various fields.
